Central Coast Today [6/9/2010]
Although Small Craft Advisory is currently in effect all over the central coast, the coastal water is really calm with a couple of feet of waves and just a few knots of winds. There will be strong gusts from this afternoon, calming down Saturday. Sunday seems a good day for fishing.
Please make sure to check the real time plots when you venture out.
Fishing reports and the archive of these messages continue...
The rockfish fishery opens next Sunday (June 13th) between Pigeon Point and Point Arena. GG boats will go out to the ocean for the bottom fishing or stay in the bay for stripers and halibuts. HMB boats will start rockfishing as salmon counts are extremely low or none.
Monterey boats also focus on rockfish. Although it is usual to have good actions early in the season and slow down as salmon start moving to the north, it is quite early this year. Or there may not be any salmon despite of two-year closure.

Small Craft Advisory is currently in effect all over the central coast. Although the condition may be fishable, the ocean is going to be rough all week. If you have a small boat, check the condition before you go. The best bet is the bay halibut/striped bass.
Emeryville had 115 anglers for 5 boat for the bay potluck. They had 31 stripers and 60 halibuts which were less than Saturday. The strong winds inside the bay usually make it difficult to fish, or maybe the tide was not good.
Monterey had only rockfish report on Becky Ann which had 6 limits (60 rockfish, 9 Vermilion).

Small Craft Advisory is currently in effect except for Monterey Bay. GG has only few knots of winds but the south coast has 15 knots of winds. Waves are only few feet, though.
GG will have a rough week this week as winds may blow 10 - 25 knots. Monterey will also have a rough start of the week, but winds will calm down in the middle of this week.
All most all the Emeryville fleet went out for the bay potluck yesterday. They had 44 stripers and 73 halibuts for total of 115 anglers. As you may guess, New Huck Finn had the best per rod fish count, 2 fish /rod. Next is Talisman (6-pack), then C Gull II. Way to go, Jay. ![]()
Monterey and Santa Cruz boats worked on the rock fish. Chirs' Fishing must have some trips bug I couldn't get any reports. Salmon trips may not popular until private boaters start reporting salmon.

Although waves are picking up to 6 feet, the condition of the central coast remains near perfect for fishing right now. There is no warning nor advisory even in SF Bay which usually has a Small Craft Advisory.
Tomorrow may be a bit rougher with NW winds 15 knots, but still good enough to enjoy the early June sunshine and sea breeze.
My information source is out for the fishing trip, I can only report on Emeryville. There were two boats out for potluck trips in the SF bay, New Huck Fill and C Gull II.
New Huck Finn caught 22 stripers and 13 halibuts for 22 anglers. C Gull II had 19 anglers and landed 10 stripers and 10 halibuts. Jay is out every day. He must know something Dony doesn't know. Way to go, Jay! Dony, work harder!

The current condition of the central coast is near perfect for fishing. There is no warning nor advisory even in SF Bay which usually has a Small Craft Advisory.
This weekend may be a little rough especially on Sunday as the wind may pick up to 10 - 15 knots and the significant wave height can be 14 feet, and it may continue until Tuesday.
New Huck Finn from Emeryville was the only boat I got a report for yesterday. Captain Jay had 25 anglers and they caught 3 striped basses and 12 halibuts. 25 is close to the limit for the boat. I guess it was a full boat charter and guess what... Jay can have more on regular trips.
The water temperature is quite important for fishing and we always pay attention to it. Currently, the temp is too high for salmon and it may be good for tuna. Look, the temp of Half Moon Bay and the south of Monterey Bay is 61 degree! Even around Point Reyes is. Only Santa Cruz has 54 degree (too high, sigh...).
Well, we can expect a good tuna season this year again, I hope.
